High Porosity Cocos combines the properties of ATAMI coco substrate with those of perlite to increase the aeration of the substrate. ATAMI coco is known to be very clean and low in harmful salts, while also containing a balanced fertilisation. To achieve this, the coco is aged, washed, buffered and lightly fertilised.
Perlite is an amorphous rock that has been formed during volcanic eruptions. It is worked at high temperatures to make it expand. Similar to what happens with popcorn, when exposed to high temperatures, perlite expands and takes on a porous structure about twenty times its original size. By mixing this perlite with the substrate, the volume of the substrate increases considerably.
Due to the addition of perlite to the coco, the product achieves an air percentage of approximately 30%. The availability of air is essential for root development. Plants require oxygen to “burn” sugars and use them as energy. By using this energy, the root system expands and develops further.
